
About the Role
A Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant (COTA) works under the supervision of an Occupational Therapist to help patients develop, recover, and improve the skills needed for daily living and working. They provide therapeutic treatments and support to individuals with physical, mental, developmental, or emotional conditions.
Key Responsibilities:
Assist with therapy treatments: Implement treatment plans designed by Occupational Therapists, helping patients perform therapeutic activities.
Monitor patient progress: Track and document patients' progress, reporting back to the supervising Occupational Therapist.
Teach patients and families: Educate patients and their families on how to use therapeutic equipment and techniques to improve daily functioning.
Provide emotional support: Offer encouragement and support to patients and their families, helping them cope with their conditions.
Maintain therapy equipment: Ensure that therapy equipment is properly set up, maintained, and cleaned.
Conduct assessments: Assist in evaluating patients' needs and progress to adjust treatment plans as necessary.
Requirements
Education: Associate's degree from an accredited occupational therapy assistant program.
Certification: Certification as a Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant (COTA) from the National Board for Certification in Occupational Therapy (NBCOT).
Licensure: State-issued license to practice as a COTA, which may vary by state.
Skills: Strong communication skills, empathy, attention to detail, and the ability to work collaboratively with patients and healthcare teams.
Experience: Clinical experience during education and possibly additional experience in a healthcare setting.
