About the Role

A Sterile Processing Technician, also known as a Central Service Technician, is responsible for ensuring that surgical instruments and medical equipment are properly cleaned, sterilized, and prepared for use in medical procedures. They play a crucial role in maintaining a sterile environment to prevent infections and ensure patient safety.

Key Responsibilities:
Cleaning and Decontamination: Clean and decontaminate surgical instruments and equipment using specialized techniques and equipment.

Sterilization: Operate sterilization equipment, such as autoclaves, to sterilize instruments and equipment.

Inspection and Assembly: Inspect instruments for damage and wear, and assemble surgical instrument trays for use in procedures.

Packaging: Package sterilized instruments and equipment for storage and use.

Inventory Management: Maintain inventory of sterile supplies and equipment, and reorder as needed.

Record Keeping: Keep accurate records of sterilization processes, equipment maintenance, and inventory levels.

Emergency Response: Respond to emergency requests for sterile equipment during surgical procedures.

Safety Compliance: Adhere to safety guidelines and infection control protocols to maintain a clean and safe work environment.

Requirements

Education: High school diploma or equivalent; some positions may require an associate degree in a related field.


Certification: Certification from the Certification Board for Sterile Processing and Distribution (CBSPD), such as Certified Registered Central Service Technician (CRCST), is often preferred or required.


Experience: Hands-on experience in a healthcare setting, typically gained through on-the-job training or an internship program.


Skills: Attention to detail, manual dexterity, ability to follow strict protocols, and strong organizational skills.


Physical Requirements: Ability to lift and move heavy trays and equipment, and handle sharp instruments.
